The Harper's Weekly publication began in 1857 and lasted almost 60 years, covering and influencing a significant period in American history. Included here is a 15" x 10-1/2" page from Harper's Weekly, taken from the September 12, 1874 issue, page 756. The large drawing is of the Red Stockings playing against the Athletics on Prince's Ground. The caption reads, "The American Base-Ball Players In England - Match Between The Red Stockings And The Athletics, Prince's Ground, Brompton." This lot also includes a colored Gray Parker drawing of equal size, displaying men playing baseball on horses. The caption reads, "Base-Ball Of The Future." Both of these pieces are matted and framed, and are in EX-NM condition with some discoloration from age and one small stain on the border, which does not affect the image.
