When Steve Carlton had his first tryouts in 1963, scouts questioned whether he could throw hard enough to make the big leagues, but Carlton, a dedicated worker at conditioning throughout his career, built himself up with weights and his fastball became his strikeout pitch. On the left front tail of this road flannel jersey is the "Rawlings" label with the size "44" and below this is the wash tag with the flag tag reading "Set 1 1969." Between the Rawlings label and the wash tag is the outline of the name "Carlton," which is no longer there. Across the front of the shirt is the team name "Cardinals" in red on blue embroidered stitch. Going through the letter "C" is a gold embroidered bat with a red embroidered Cardinal perched on each end. On the back of the jersey is the player name "Carlton" in red on blue felt. The player number "32" appears on both the left breast and on the back of the jersey. The numbers are also made of red on blue felt. On the left sleeve is baseball's "100th Anniversary" patch. The name on the back, the front and back numbers, and the anniversary patch have all been restored. There is an autograph on the right front which rates an 8. The autograph comes with a letter from PSA/DNA. The jersey shows game use and, with the exception of the above-mentioned changes, appears to have no other alterations of any kind.
