Knuckleballer Bob Purkey was a top starter for the Cincinnati Reds in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Unlike most knuckleball specialists, one of his strengths was excellent control. In the neck of this road vest-style flannel jersey is the "MacGregor" label with the size "44." Across the front of the jersey is the team name "Cincinnati." The player number "37" appears on both the left breast and on the back of the shirt. The letters and numbers are made of red on blue tackle twill. The bottom of the jersey has been custom cut. Included with the jersey are flannel pants belonging to another player. Inside the back of the pants is a white felt patch reading "8 36 21" which is done in red chain stitch. The numbers denote the player number, waist size and inseam, respectively. In the waistband is the "MacGregor" label with the size "36" and adjacent is the "MacGregor" label reading "Set 2 1963." The jersey and pants show game use and, with the exception of the custom-cut jersey, appear to have no other alterations of any kind.
