On July 22nd, 1963 Cassius Clay attended the “Liston vs. Patterson II” boxing match in Las Vegas to scout out a potential future opponent ringside. The fight was over quickly as Liston defeated Patterson in the first round. A scorned Clay entered the ring just minutes after the fight had stopped and let the crowd know “Liston isn’t great he will fall in 8” as he held up 8 fingers stomping around the ring. One lucky fan who sat close to Clay before the first round stoppage had Clay sign his ticket stub. Clay signed the back of this Liston vs. Patterson II ticket stub in beautiful bold pen and in our opinion the signature rates a 9. Ali would go on to beat Liston in February of 1964 for the Heavyweight title, and after would change his name to “Cassius X” and later “Muhammad Ali”. An increasingly rare autograph of Cassius Clay signed before he changed his name with ties to boxing history. The ticket stub has been encapsulated by PSA and graded GOOD 2 and the autograph is certified. Accompanied by an ALOA from JSA.
