In 1928, the Chicago Cubs traveled to Santa Catalina Island – 25 miles off the coast of Los Angeles for the team’s eighth Spring Training. During this time, a number of photographs were taken by the paper’s staff. Shortly after, many of these were developed, compiled into photo albums and then, in turn, ceremoniously dispensed to an exclusive slate of recipients. The offered Cubs Spring Training photo album was prepared specifically for Hall of Famer Joe McCarthy, the team’s manager. Every one of the 74 photographs in the booklet remains in EX-MT condition (most are NM or stronger). The textured leather binding is in excellent condition with only a one-inch stress split at the bottom of the front cover’s hinge. The back cover, as intended, is featureless. Each linen-backed photo provides durable substance to the assembled composite. The subject matter ranges from inane antics to regimented jumping jacks on the beach. Players such as Charlie Grimm, Art Nehf, Woody English, Charlie Root and Riggs Stephenson are all represented. As should be expected, photo renderings of Joe McCarthy, Kiki Cuyler, Gabby Hartnett and Hack Wilson are also represented. This album is a vintage jewel that remains in outstanding condition and traces directly to the hands of Hall of Famer Joe McCarthy. Accompanied by a PSA/DNA LOA.
