This trophy was presented to Pablo L. Villegas by the Cuban Newspaper, “El Diario de la Marina” in January of 1924 when he was selected as the Almendares baseball club’s biggest fan. The Almendares club was one of the oldest and most distinguished baseball teams in the old Cuban League, which existed from 1878 to 1961. The large metal cup trophy is made of sterling silver, it stands 14” tall, 12-1/2” wide and weighs 2.6 pounds. The trophy is engraved “DIARIO DE LA MARINA - CONCURSO POPULAR DE BASE BALL - TRIUNFADOR SR. PABLO L. VILLEGAS - COMO FANATICO MAS ALMENDARISTA - ENERO 25, 1924”. The nearly 90-year old trophy is in EX condition and makes a great display piece.
