In his second class (junior) season of 1963, Roger Staubach won the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award while leading the Navy Midshipmen to a 9-1 record and a final ranking of #2 in the nation. The Midshipmen played for the National Championship against #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. That year, he led Navy to victory in their annual rivalry with Notre Dame. Navy did not beat Notre Dame again until 2007. In his three seasons at Navy, he completed 292 of 463 passes, with only 19 interceptions, and gained a school record 4,253 yards of total offense. Staubach is the last player from a military academy to win the Heisman Trophy. This jersey comes to us with no provenance and was originally sold on eBay. This style was worn by Staubach during practice both in 1962 and in 1963 as well as during a photo shoot in the locker room before the Army-Navy game during his Heisman trophy campaign. Inside the left rear tail of this gold knit long sleeve jersey is the “King O’Shea” manufacturer’s tag. Adjacent is the size “46” tag. Inside the right rear tail is the “Eddie Leonard Annapolis, Maryland” distributor’s tag. Player number “12”appears on the front, back and on both sleeves in navy blue on white tackle twill. The jersey is practice worn/photo shoot worn and appears to have no alterations of any kind. It is accompanied by a photo of Staubach wearing the jersey.
