A natural athlete blessed with tremendous power, a rifle arm and a durable body, Eddie Mathews was the premier third baseman of his era. A feared left-handed slugger, Mathews became the seventh player in major league history to hit 500 home runs, finishing his career with 512. His powerful stroke and bat speed were marveled at by opponents. Eddie Mathews was the only man to play for the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, and Atlanta Braves. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1978. In the neck of the jersey is the "MacGregor" label with the size "44." Below this is another MacGregor label reading "Set 2 1963." (This label appears on the inside left front tail as well.) Under this is a white felt patch with the name "Mathews" in red chain stitch. Across the front of the jersey is the name "Braves" in script-style letters. The player number "41" appears on both the left breast and on the back of the shirt. The letters and numbers are made of red on blue tackle twill. On the right front is an autograph which rates an 8. On the left sleeve is the Indian Head patch. The name on the back has been removed. The jersey shows game-use and with the exception of the removed name on the back appears to have no other alterations of any kind. Autograph comes with an LOA from James Spence Authentication.
