At Springfield College with Dr. James Naismith, Amos Alonzo Stagg took the game of basketball west with him to the University Chicago in 1892. Stagg is credited with holding the first five-on-five player game (Naismith's game did not have a specific number of players) at the school. He organized and ran the National High School Tournament (similar to today's NCAA college tournament) from 1917 through 1930, a competition that helped standardize rules throughout the country. Stagg had played in the first public basketball game at Springfield, scoring the faculty team's only basket in a 5-1 loss to the students. Silver Relief medallion. In excellent condition; slight wear on nose.
