The Spirits of St. Louis might as well have been named the "Free Spirits" of St. Louis; this was a unique, unpredictable team blessed with a wealth of young talent. The Spirits were born in the summer of 1974 after the owners of the Carolina Cougars sold the franchise to several New York businessmen. The new owners promptly moved the team to St. Louis. The new logo was clever, and the Spirits' uniforms were classy. The Spirits played their home games in the 18,000 seat St. Louis Arena (also known as the "Checkerdome"). Freddie Lewis averaged a career high 22.6 points per game with the Spirits in 1974–1975 and was named MVP of the 1975 ABA All-Star Game. This rare jersey originates from the trainer of the ABA Spirits. On the right front tail is the “Rawlings” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “42”. Across the front is the team name “Spirits St. Louis”. Player number “14” appears on both the front and back. Player name “LEWIS” appears across the back sewn directly on the shirt. All numbering and lettering are done in white on black tackle twill. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent use. Originally sourced from the Spirits Head Trainer.
