A Glimpse into the Past

Step back in time to the early 20th century with this remarkable collection of swimming medals, each a testament to the rich history and tradition of competitive swimming. These medals, awarded to the accomplished swimmer W.M. Pomeroy, are not only symbols of athletic achievement but also exquisite pieces of art, meticulously crafted and preserved.

The Olympic Club Medals

The first two medals in this collection are adorned with the iconic red enameled “O” with wings, the emblem of The Olympic Club in San Francisco. These medals, measuring 1-9/16” x 1-1/4” and 1-1/2” x 1-5/16” respectively, weigh 15 grams each. The front of the first medal features a casted image of two men, decorative leaves, and a hand-engraved banner that reads “1914.” The reverse side is engraved with “Swimming – 66yards (Side Stroke) Won By W.M. Pomeroy, O.C.” and stamped “SHREWE & CO.” The second medal showcases a single swimmer and similar decorative elements, with the reverse hand-engraved “SWIMMING 66 ? YDS SIDE STROKE – WALTER POMEROY – MARCH 6 ‘14” and stamped “STERLING” along with an “N” inside a small shield.

Additional Medals of Distinction

The third medal, measuring 1-7/8” x 1-3/8” and weighing 13 grams, features a hand-engraved banner reading “SWIMNMING” at the top. The reverse side is stamped “STERLING” and includes a pin for wearing. The lower portion of the medal displays a casted image of a diver surrounded by decorative leaves and the red enameled “O” with wings. The reverse is engraved “WON BY W. POMEROY 11-6-13.”

The fourth medal, measuring 1-9/16” x 1-1/4” and weighing 14 grams, mirrors the design of the first medal with its red enameled “O” and casted image of two men. The reverse is engraved “P.A. Championship Swimming Meet – 880yards Open – W. Pomeroy – October 16-1914” and stamped “SHREWE & CO. SAN FRANCISCO.”
