Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Appointment: A Historical Treasure
A Glimpse into a Pivotal Year
Abraham Lincoln, one of America’s most revered Presidents, is celebrated for his leadership during the American Civil War, particularly in the critical year of 1863. This year marked significant events such as the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, the delivery of the Gettysburg Address, and the enactment of the first Conscription Act, which led to the infamous New York City Riots. It was also the year that witnessed the death of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, signaling the beginning of the end for the South.
The Presidential Appointment Document
At the heart of this remarkable display is a 14″ x 17-1/2″ standard Presidential appointment parchment, adorned with ornate eagle and military vignettes. This document is flanked by two 8″ x 10″ black and white photographs of Abraham Lincoln, all elegantly double matted and framed to 41-1/2″ x 34-1/2″. The document reads in part: “Know ye that reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities of Walter McFarland, I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him Captain on the Corps of Engineers, in the Service of The United States.” This significant artifact is signed in ink by President Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.
Additional Elements of the Display
Complementing this historical document are several other elements that enhance its significance:
- A 4″ color Presidential Seal
- A 4″ x 5-1/2″ American Flag with 35 stars
- A “1863” matting cutout
- A 4″ x 6″ postcard of the White House
In the lower center of the display is a plaque that reads in part: “This elaborately designed military document, which appoints Walter McFarland to the rank of Captain in the Corps of Engineers, was signed April 14, 1863 by President Lincoln and countersigned Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War.”
Condition and Provenance
This extraordinary piece is in fantastic condition for its age, exhibiting only very minor foxing and a single horizontal crease across the top section. There is some scratching on the bottom of the frame, yet the signatures remain bold, rating a strong 8 to 9. This item is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity (LOA) from JSA and an additional LOA, further attesting to its historical significance.
