Penny Marshall directed some of the biggest movies of recent years, including "Big", "Awakenings" and "A League of Their Own", but to a legion of TV watchers she'll always be Laverne DeFazio, the Brooklyn-accented half of the duo Laverne and Shirley in the classic sitcom of the same name, about the misadventures of two Milwaukee girls working overtime at the Shotz brewery in the 1950s and 1960s. The tough but vulnerable Laverne almost always wore a script-style "L" on her clothing, such as this famous hot pink sweater. The sweater has a white collar and light pink buttons and the famous "L" on the left chest is made of black felt. Like Fonzie's leather jacket and June Cleaver's apron, the sweater is a piece of American pop culture history worthy of the Smithsonian, and comes with a letter of authenticity from the show's casting director who obtained it in 1980.
