This is a gorgeous example of a 1950s Vendo nickel coin changer, model DB400, signifying that the machine held 400 nickels worth of change for dimes and quarters. Founded in 1937 Kansas City, Vendo is famous for manufacturing vending machines for soft drinks. Their coin-changing machines were entirely mechanical, no electricity was needed to operate them. The serial number (31115583) identifies this red-colored machine as having been produced in November, 1953. Measuring approximately 15" tall x 11" wide x 5" deep, there is an original "Have A Coke, Get Your Nickels Here" 7-1/2" square cardboard insert in the front display window, slightly faded. Unlike the Vendos produced in the 1960s, this model had rounded corners. Another identifying feature is the "Empty" window in the upper left hand corner.
