Gen.", 5" x 8", on official Headquarters Armies of the United States letterhead "City Point, Va." with interesting content, in part: "... Having known your father from my infancy and knowing him as a lawyer of ability, and of a higher order of education than is generally attained, even by persons of his profession ..." Just 12 days before receiving Lee's surrender, ending the Civil War!
