This lot consists of four letters, complete with their original three-cent stamped envelopes, dating back to the Civil War. Three of the letters were written by a lawyer named R.H. Gilles, who lived in Washington, and were sent to Lorenzo Dusenburg, who runs Gilles' farm in New York. The letters are dated November 21, 1864, February 13, 1865, and March 5, 1865. He mostly discusses how things are going on the farm and briefly mentions his work with the military and his multiple trips to the Supreme Court. The fourth letter was written by a woman named Sarah B. Willits of Michigan, and was postmarked March 24, 1865. This letter was written to Mrs. C.M. Bishop. In the letter, Ms. Willits discusses news regarding her friends and family, and mentions that the military draft was taking place in Detroit. Existing for about 130 years, these letters are in surprisingly good condition, rating VG-EX, with only slight yellowing, and slight tearing on some of the folds.
