War Dated, Feb. 7, 1864, endorsement entirely in Lincoln's hand, in full: "Is this case of a class which can be adjusted now? & if so is it so presented as to be ready for an adjustment? A. Lincoln, Feb. 7 1864" on front of mailing envelope, 8.25" x 3.5", addressed "To His Excellency, Abraham Lincoln, President of the U.S." Accompanied by autograph letter signed from Surgeon in Chief of the 16th Army Corps to Lincoln, in part: "... I have carefully examined Mr. J.M. Williams ... and find that he is unfit for the duties of a soldier in the Army of the U.S ... He is a loyal man deserving the consideration of the Commission charged to grant esemtion [sic] ..." Outstanding example of Lincoln assisting one of his soldiers, dark, bold signature and entire penning, light brush to date, scattered light toning and soiling. This lot comes with a letter from PSA/DNA.
