With his name firmly rooted in American Civil Rights history, and as one of baseball's all-time greats, the signature of Jackie Robinson is highly coveted and always in demand. The challenge for the astute collector is finding that one unique example that sets itself apart from the others such as this one does. The side panel (Jackie's usual favorite spot for signing) of this ONL Frick baseball has been signed and inscribed "Merry Christmas from Jackie Robinson, Dec. 16, 1949." in bold red ink rating a strong 8 to 9. To accompany the ball is a letter from it's previous owner detailing how he came to possess such an interesting and unique item. As the story goes, Robinson paid a visit to a Brooklyn orphanage just before Christmas in 1949 in an effort to bring some holiday cheer to those unfortunate children who were without family at that most festive time of year. The recipient of this prized piece had a particularly troubled past as he had been orphaned just prior to World War II when Russia took over Latvia. The boy somehow ended up on the other side of the world in this Brooklyn orphanage. While visiting that day Robinson put pen to ball in this most unique fashion for him. The baseball became a prized keepsake, which remained in his possession until his death, likely a reminder of his earliest days in America. It is only now being made available for sale. The ball itself shows wear including toning, light scuffing, and general use as one would expect considering the life of its original owner. It is clear though that it became a cherished piece after being signed as the signature itself remains unaltered. The autograph comes with a letter from PSA/DNA.
