By the time Wayne Gretzky retired from the game in 1999 after a three-year stint with the New York Rangers, he owned every hockey scoring record imaginable and enough league trophies to fill a hardware store. In all, Gretzky notched 1,072 goals and over 1,900 assists, and when he hung up his skates, the NHL waived its eligibility rules so that Gretzky could immediately enter the Hall of Fame. In the neck of the jersey is the "Maska" label and next to this is the size tag "54." On the back tail are two "CCM" patches and two "NHL" patches. This is customary on Gretzky jerseys. On the inside back tail is a black patch with the player number "99" done in white Swiss embroidered stitch and on one side of the shirt is piece of velcro that Gretzky uses to tuck in one side of his shirt when he skates. Both the number and the velcro are found on Gretzky jerseys. The fighting strap has been removed, which is also customary of Gretzky jerseys. On the front of the jersey is the Kings emblem and on the back is a black nameplate with the name "Gretzky." On the upper left front is the letter "C" denoting "Captain." All the letters are made of silver on white tackle twill. The player number "99" appears on the back of the jersey as well as on each sleeve. The numbers on the back are made of silver on white tackle twill and the numbers on the sleeves are made of silver on black tackle twill. The jersey shows good game use and with the exception of the removed fighting strap, the extra NHL and CCM labels on the back tail, the extra player number and the piece of velcro, appears to have no other alterations of any kind.
