This official presidential document, signed by United States President Ulysses S. Grant, designates that "John Dietrich" perform the duties of "William C. Wagley, Surveyor of Customs for the Fort of Velasco, in the State of Texas," who had been suspended from office due to a newly approved act which regulated tenure. This 11.5" x 15" document was dated July 10, 1869, and was signed by Grant and the Secretary of the Treasury at the time. It is stamped with the official seal, and has been matted and framed to a final size of 23" x 29". The document itself is in good overall condition with visible fold marks and tears. Grant's signature, "U. S. Grant," rates a 7 with the "S" partially affected by a tear, and it comes with a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
