Elston Howard must have decided that nine consecutive All-Star Games as a player were not enough for him, because he continued to participate in them as a coach. This award was presented to Howard for being one of the coaches for the American League team in the 1977 All-Star Game, which held special significance for him because it was held in Yankee Stadium. The wood base includes metal logos of each American League team as well as the AL logo, and on top of it is a gold plaque reading "Presented to Elston Howard for his participation as a member of the American League team in the Major League All Star Game Yankee Stadium, July 19, 1977 Lee Mac Phail President." Resting on the octagonal base, which is about 10 inches in diameter, is a glass bowl with the American League logo and the year "1977" engraved in it. The glass bowl is rather heavy, representing the significance of the occasion. The award comes with a letter of authenticity from Howard's wife Arlene.
