While the success of television programs like "The Sopranos" and movies like "The Godfather" shows that the American public has significant interest in the workings of organized crime, only the most charismatic mob bosses truly capture the public eye. John Gotti is unquestionably the most prominent Mafia celebrity in recent memory, labeled by the media as the "Dapper Don" for his tailored suits and later the "Teflon Don" when it seemed like no criminal charge against him would stick. From his rise to power in New York's Gambino crime family, after ordering the execution of then-head "Big Paul" Castellano, to his downfall at the hands of associate-turned-informant Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, and until his death from throat cancer on June 10, 2002, after over 11 years of incarceration in a maximum-security prison, Gotti held a unique position; people condemned his criminal actions, and yet they admired the suave and controlling way in which he carried himself. Gotti penned this letter to his dentist in March 1997 while at the notoriously harsh maximum-security prison in Marion. The letter states, "Dr. McCuan, I imagine you know that I'm back at Marion. I'm also sure you're aware that I had the surgery. I know that you have a big work load and take the emergency cases first. My situation isn't an emergency, but when I left Springfield Dr. Mcdermott said that you would want to see me in a couple of days, to see how the healing was going and to give me a schedule for impressions and such. I wouldn't bother you but I've been back three weeks. It's a bit difficult eating as I'm sure you realize and would appreciate an appointment as soon as convenient to you--Thanks! Gotti, John #18261-053 D-D-16" The letter is stamped "Mar 1997 USP-Mar Dental Svc." to designate that it is intraprison mail from Marion to the Dentist. Written at the bottom in response to Gotti is "We will call you in soon to check your surg. site and take the impressions. Robert Varnum, DA 3-7-97." The letter is written in black ballpoint ink on an 8.5" x 11" piece of looseleaf paper with two holes punched at the top. It is in excellent condition aside from one vertical fold, several light horizontal folds, and a slight tear between each hole and the edge of the paper. The printed signature and handwriting by Gotti, rates a 9. Gotti signature in any form is rare, but a prison letter with great content and a printed signature that includes both his prison number "18261-053" and cell block "D-D-16" is exceptional. Like some of Gotti's worst enemies, such an item may never be seen again. The autograph comes with a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
