Johnny was the youngest of the "Cranston Cooneys," a Rhode Island ball-playing dynasty which was started in the 1890's by James Joseph Cooney, whose four sons all played pro ball. Johnny Cooney's best averages as a regular came with the Stengel-managed Braves, .318 in 1940 and .319 in 1941. In the neck of the jersey is the size tag "42" and adjacent is the "Horace Partridge" label. Below this is a white felt patch with the name "Cooney" in red chain stitch. Across the front of the jersey is the name "Braves" in script-style letters and below is the Braves "Tomahawk." On the back of the shirt is the player number "28." The letters and numbers are made of red on black felt. The jersey shows wear and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
