George Pipgras was selected to work as an umpire for the 1944 World Series by President William Harridge. Offered is the letter Pipgras received dated “September 22nd, 1944” informing him he would be working the World Series. The letter, in part, reads “This is to advise that you have been selected as one of the umpires to officiate in the coming World Series. Announcement of your selection will not be made until after the season is over and I will ask that you treat this assignment as strictly confidential”. Harridge signed on the bottom in black marker and in our opinion rates a 9. Also included are two lineup cards that display the starting players from the 1944 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Browns.
