Howard “Hopalong” Cassady won the 1955 Heisman Trophy at Ohio State while leading the Buckeyes to the National Championship his junior season. Cassady was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979. When he left Ohio State, he held school records for career rushing yards, all-purpose yards and scoring. Cassady was nicknamed “Hopalong” by local sportswriters as they described him as having “hopped all over the field like the performing cowboy.” It was a tribute to Hopalong Cassidy, a cowboy hero played by actor William Boyd. On the inside of the crotch piece is the Rawlings manufacturers tag size “44”. Attached is a “Lippman’s” distributors tag and a tag with washing instructions. The crotch piece has been removed but the tags remain in tact. There are laundry markings on these tags in black marker. Across the front, back and on the right sleeve is the player number “40” in blue tackle twill. On the left sleeve is the player number “0” with an outline of where the “4” originally was and has been removed. Cassady signed the front of the jersey with the added inscription “Hopalong” and in our opinion the signature rates a near 7. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent use. Accompanied by an ALOA from JSA.
