On Valentine's Day 1993, 17-year-old Bethel High School basketball star Allen Iverson was bowling in Hampton, Va., with five high school friends. It was supposed to be an ordinary evening, but it became a night that defined Iverson's young life. A quarrel soon erupted into a brawl pitting Iverson's young black friends against a group of white patrons. The fallout from the fight and the handling of the subsequent trial landed the teenager -- considered by some the nation's best high school athlete -- in jail and sharply divided the city along racial lines. Iverson was subsequently thrown off of his high school team during their state championship run and his then frustrated head coach gave his jersey to the assistant coach and told him “Get these out of my site”. The coach kept the jersey all these years and it is now offered as an incredibly rare Iverson high school jersey. On the front left tail is the Russell Athletic manufacturers tag size “40” with washing instructions. Attached is a flag tag reading “100% NYLON”. Across the chest reads “BETHEL”. Adjacent below and on the back is the player number “3”. All numbering and lettering is screened in white on green. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriate use. Accompanied by a LOA from our consignor.
