An eight-time Pro Bowl candidate and top ten all-time in pass attempts, completions, passing yards and passing TD’s, Joe Montana set the standard of excellence for all contemporary quarterbacks. However, it is his two regular season MVP awards, three Super Bowl MVP awards, and four Super Bowl Championships that propel him into the upper echelon of elite professional athletes. Montana was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 2000. On the front left tail is the Wilson manufacturers tag size “44” with washing instructions. Across the front, back and on both sleeves is the player number “16” in red vinyl numbering. Across the back on a white nameplate is the player name “MONTANA” also in red vinyl. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriately light quarterback use, considering how sparingly he played in the 1979 season. Montana was the second-string quarterback behind starter Steve DeBerg in 1979 and only attempted 23 passes. However, in the 1980 season with considerably more playing time, he attempted 273 passes while adding 15 touchdowns. This is the earliest known fully documented Montana that has gone to auction. Either worn by the iconic Hall of Famer during his inaugural NFL season or his NFL rookie season. Originally sourced from 49ers equipment manager Chico Norton through hobby veteran Lon Lewis. With its lineage, this is the finest Montana that is available. Accompanied by a MEARS LOA grading the jersey an A10.
1979-80 Joe Montana San Francisco 49ers Game-Used Rookie Jersey (Graded A10 • Sourced From Equipment Manager Through Lon Lewis • Earliest Fully Documented Career Example)
