After roughly four decades of American League dominance by a string of separate dynasties all bearing the imprimatur of the New York Yankees, the professional baseball world got its first taste of a championship ball club able to string together multiple titles that didn’t carry the regal Bronx Bomber pinstripes or iconic “NY” lettered logo. Come to think of it, they looked nothing at all like the Yankees, from their elaborate mustaches to the garish green-and-gold color schemes of their uniforms. It was 1972, and a rowdy bunch of mustached vagabonds, Hall-of-Famers-in-waiting and one curiously eccentric and bombastic owner conjured up a mixture of world-class pitching, timely hitting, sound defense and a take-no prisoners belligerence into the first of what would be three consecutive World Series titles. This spectacular trophy was presented to George Hendrick, a young outfielder of considerable talent and flair who would go on to have a distinguished major league career with six different teams. Produced by Jostens, this owners-sized 1972 Oakland A’s World Series trophy measures 24 inches in height and features 24 gold-colored pennants (bearing the team name of each major league franchise) displayed around the perimeter of a black Lucite base. At center is a silver metal baseball set within a gold band 10 inches in diameter atop which rests a crown. Displayed directly in front of this are the 1972 World Series press pins for the A’s and Reds, and directly in front of them a 3-by-2-inch gold-and-green metal nameplate that includes the scores of each of the seven contests. The 2-inch high gold-colored band affixed around the base reads “OAKLAND A’s 1972 WORLD CHAMPIONS” and bears the engraved names of the 36 players, managers, coaches, owner and team officials. Hendrick's personal 1972 full-size World Series trophy, is among only a handful of publicly offered examples marking the first of three consecutive World Series title for one of the key baseball dynasties of the modern age. Accompanied by a LOA from George Hendrick.
