Jim “Catfish” Hunter was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987. Hunter was a five-time World Champion, a Cy Young Award winner and threw a perfect game in 1968. His number 27 is retired by the Oakland Athletics franchise. On the front left tail of this 1968 one year style jersey is the Tim McAuliffe manufacturer’s tag. Attached below are two tags reading the year “‘68” and the size “44”. Across the chest reads “OAKLAND” embroidered in green on yellow on green. Across the back is the player number “27” in green on yellow tackle twill with a green stitched border. There are custom underarm openings with extra material added to allow more freedom of motion. There is a slight tear on the bottom of the back. There is a 50/50 chance that this jersey was worn when Hunter threw his perfect game on May 8th, 1968 at home against the Minnesota Twins. The industry accepted standard is that players were issued two home and two road jerseys throughout the season. Photos from Hunter’s perfect game match-up similarly to the placement of the jersey’s identifiers. The custom underarm openings are not seen in photos from the perfect game, however it is possible they were added after the game. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent use. Accompanied by a LOA from Photo-Match.com grading the jersey a 9.
