The Spirits of St. Louis might as well have been named the "Free Spirits" of St. Louis. They were a unique, unpredictable team blessed with a wealth of young talent. The Spirits were born in the summer of 1974 after the owners of the Carolina Cougars sold the franchise to several New York businessmen. The new owners promptly moved the team to St. Louis. The new logo was clever, and the Spirits' uniforms were classy. The Spirits played their home games in the 18,000 seat St. Louis Arena (also known as the "Checkerdome"). Chaney averaged 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in his one season with the Spirits. On the front right tail is the “Rawlings” manufacturer’s tag with size “42” and wash instructions. Across the front reads “Spirits St. Louis”. Adjacent below and on back is the player number “12”. Across the back is the player name “CHANEY”. All lettering and numbering is done in the same white on black tackle twill. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriate use in fantastic condition.
