Pete Rose, a switch hitter, is the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053) and more. He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award and made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B & 1B). In 1999, Rose was named to the Major League Baseball All-Century team. On the front left tail is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with size “42” and wash instructions. Adjacent below is the year “1971” in red chain-stitching. On the inner rear collar is a grey flannel strip tag with “Rose” in red chain-stitching. Across the front reads “CINCINNATI”. Adjacent below and on back is the player number “14”. Across the back is the player name “ROSE”. All lettering and numbering is done in the same red tackle twill. Rose has signed the front of the jersey in faded red marker, in our opinion the signature rates a 7. This flannel is attributed to the 1970 World Series due to the two-button placement above “CINCINNATI” and the change in “CINCINNATI” from red on white tackle twill during the 1970 regular season, to solid red tackle twill for the World Series and the 1971 season. This leads us to believe the flannel was ordered for the 1970 World Series and subsequently may have been used during the 1971 season as well. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows outstanding use. This shirt was originally sourced from Rose’s wife who brought the jersey to a local Cincinnati baseball card shop in the early 1980s. Accompanied by a LOA from JSA and PSA/DNA for the signature and an additional LOA from Dave Grob grading the jersey an A9.5. Further accompanying this lot is an original wire photo showing Rose, in what may possibly be this exact shirt, arguing with the umpire in the 7th inning of Game 4 during the 1970 World Series. You would be harder pressed to find a finer Rose flannel.
