Muhammad Ali is the only three-time lineal World Heavyweight Champion. Ali revolutionized the sport of boxing by sheer power and magnetism of his personality. Ali thrived in, and craved the spotlight where he was sometimes provocative, frequently outlandish and almost always entertaining. Sports Illustrated magazine named the first Clay (Ali had not yet changed his name from Cassius Clay) vs. Liston fight as the fourth greatest sports moment of the 20th century. Clay wore this wore while training for the re-match. White terrycloth robe with a “MARTEX” manufacturer’s tag inside the collar. Below is a “PILGRIM” size “L 42/44” strip tag. On the back reads “Cassius Clay” in navy blue chain stitching and an image of a boxing glove below in the same stitching. The robe shows outstanding wear, as there are holes near the left armpit area and the neck area. The entire right arm of the robe is missing. The robe is stained from heavy use. This robe is properly tagged, was presented to us as training-worn from Clay/Liston I and shows outstanding wear. Sourced from Muhammad Ali’s first wife who acquired it in 1964, accompanied by a Family LOA.
