Christy Mathewson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 and is one of the first five inaugural members. Tobacco box top that measures approximately 15” x 11". Across the top reads “Tuxedo THE PERFECT TOBACCO”. A portrait of Mathewson is below and underneath is the text “CHRISTY MATHEWSON -Famous pitcher of the New York Giants, says: Tuxedo gets to me in a natural, pleasant way. It’s what I call good, honest, companionable tobacco—the kind to stick to.” with Mathewson signing off on his statement. The extremely fragile EX-condition box top has benefited from discreet and major professional restoration to firm up potential spots of vulnerability and touch up areas of color loss. Such repairs are modest relative to the overall surface area and do not diminish the originality of this classic retail piece.

Please note that a correction and/or update has been made to this lot and the printed catalog differs from what is online.
