James King was a member of the US Olympic Basketball team that won gold at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. This medal was presented to James after he and his teammates won the gold medal in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup held in Italy in 1967. The gold medal weighs in at 81 grams, measures of 2-3/16” across and 3/16” thick. The face of the medal features the casted image of basketball player and “FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE BASKETBALL AMATEUR” in relief along the perimeter. The verso of the medal features the casted image of the globe and “THE INTERCONTINENTAL CUP MCMLXVII” in relief along the perimeter. The center of the globe reads “ROMA”, “VARSESE” and “NAPOLI”; the three Italian cities where the tournament was held. The gold medal is in EX condition with some minor scratches, several located in one spot. Accompanied by a LOA from James King that states, “This is the gold medal that members of our US team received after winning the World Cup event in Rome.”
