Henry Louis Gehrig set several major league records including the most career grand slams (23) and most consecutive games played (2,130). Gehrig is chiefly remembered for his prowess as a hitter and his durability, a trait which earned him his nickname "The Iron Horse", as well as the pathos of his farewell from baseball at age 36, when he was stricken with ALS. Gehrig was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. In 1969 he was voted the greatest first baseman of all time by the Baseball Writers' Association and was the leading vote-getter on the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. On back of this “The American League Baseball Club of New York” check has “Balance in full for signing three (3) year contract $833.33” typed on back. Adjacent is “Henry Louis Gehrig” in pencil rating a 9. There are some bank holes and markings through the check, of which only one affects the bottom of the “H” in “Henry”, surrounding the rest of the signature on back. The check is made out to “Henry Louis Gehrig” dated “September 25, 1930”. The check is signed by long time Yankees owner “Jacob Ruppert” in black steel tip fountain pen rating a strong 9, counter signed by J.G. Barrow. The check is perforated at both the top and bottom, NM overall. Accompanied by a LOA from JSA.
