Nicknamed “Lefty", Steve Carlton has the second-most lifetime strikeouts of any left-handed pitcher as well as the second-most lifetime wins of any left-handed hurler. He was the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards in a career. One of his most remarkable records was accounting for nearly half of his team's wins, when he won 27 games for the last-place (59-97) 1972 Phillies. He is still the last National League pitcher to win 25 or more games in one season as well as the last pitcher from any team to throw more than 300 innings in a season. During his 1977 Cy Young campaign, Lefty won 23 games (17 complete games) with a 2.64 ERA over 283 innings while striking out 198 batters and only walking 98. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. On the left front tail of this powder blue road jersey is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “46”. Directly below is a strip tag with “77 1” embroidered in navy blue chain stitch indicating jersey year and set, respectively. Inside the rear collar is a similar strip tag with player name “Carlton” embroidered in navy blue chain stitch. On the left breast is the team “P” logo. Player number “32” appears on both the front and back. Player name “CARLTON” appears on back on a powder blue nameplate. All numbers and letters are done in burgundy on white tackle twill. Carlton has signed the front of the shirt above his number in blue marker rating an 8. The front features a full zipper which is in working order. You would be hard pressed to find a finer Carlton knit. The jersey shows good game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind. It is accompanied by a LOA from JSA for the signature.
