After being known as a slam dunking shooting guard with the Sonics, where he helped the team to their only NBA Championship in 1979, and an all-around scorer with the Suns, Dennis Johnson re-invented himself again when he arrived in Boston, his third and final NBA home. Not only did he establish himself as a playmaking point guard alongside Larry Bird, but even more importantly, he helped to shore up a shaky defense that had often been battered against more physical opponents in the early 80s. In Johnson’s first year with the team, his acquisition proved very beneficial when the Celtics met the Lakers in the NBA Finals, which spawned an historic rivalry that remains alive and well today. In a tooth and nail, seven game contest, the Celtics outlasted the Lakers, in large part because of the defensive work of Dennis Johnson against Lakers star Magic Johnson, who was held to a subpar 17 points per game in each of the last four games of the series and was thereafter referred to as “Tragic” Johnson in Boston. That championship was the 15th in Celtics franchise history and the second of Dennis Johnson’s storied career. His play in the 1984 Finals no doubt influenced his post-humous Hall of Fame induction in 2010. This size 12, 14K gold ring was presented to Johnson in commemoration of that 1984 championship season, and it was obtained directly from the Johnson family. The top boasts a green sapphire Celtics clover with a large circular diamond in its center. Around this clover are the words “BOSTON CELTICS WORLD CHAMPIONS”. On the left panel is the year “1984” around a green NBA logo. Underneath this is a small engraving bearing the word “TEAMWORK”. The right panel displays a casting of the player name “JOHNSON” above a Celtic with a pipe in his mouth who is holding a trophy with the engraving “XV”, which denotes this 15th Celtics championship. Underneath this is engraved the word “PRIDE”. The ring is in overall NRMT condition and comes in a black velour box. Comes with a family LOA.
