This Official Spalding NBA Game Ball was used on April 10th, 1989 in a game between the Boston Celtics and the New Jersey Nets. During the game, five-time NBA All-Star and HOFer Dennis Johnson, whom Larry Bird once cited as his best teammate ever, dished out his 5,000th NBA assist, an accomplishment which is celebrated on the ball itself. The panel above the Spalding panel has been painted white with red and black painted lettering that reads “TO – DENNIS JOHNSON ON HANDING OUT HIS 5,000TH NBA CAREER ASSIST in the NBA ON MON. APRIL 10, 1989”. The panel below lists the game with white letter on a green painted background, reading “VS THE NEW JERSEY NETS at BOSTON GARDEN in the FIRST QUARTER 113-112 BOSTON WIN”.
