A genial giant of a man, Nate Thurmond was one of the all-time great NBA centers, with a rugged, in-your-face style of play that frequently intimidated even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain. The Hall of Famer played 14 professional seasons in the 1960s and 1970s, posting career averages of 15.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game. Among the all-time NBA leaders in career rebounds and rebounding average, Thurmond was selected to play in seven NBA All-Star Games and was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First or Second Team five times. He still holds the NBA record for most rebounds in a quarter with 18, and he owns the distinction of being the first player ever to record a quadruple-double. Some basketball observers have suggested that the 6-11 Thurmond provided the best mix of offense and defense in basketball history. Many say that his defense was better than Chamberlain's, and that his offense was better than Bill Russell's. With quickness and long hands, a smooth outside shooting touch, tenacious rebounding, classic shot blocking ability, and a total team attitude, Thurmond offered a perfectly balanced package. He was selected by the San Francisco Warriors as the third overall pick in the 1963 Draft, where he would apprentice under Chamberlain, the NBA’s benchmark big man at the time. In his first season, Thurmond found his way to the NBA Finals, where his playing minutes increased along with his production. He was elected to the NBA All-Rookie team following that season, and by mid-way through the 1964-1965 campaign he had become such a strong on court contributor that the Warriors felt comfortable enough to deal Chamberlain away to the 76ers and hand over full time center man duties to Thurmond. He thrived in this new leading role, landing All-Star selections in four consecutive years between 1965 and 1968, later adding three more All-Star appearances to his resume in the early 1970s. In a nod to his playing ability, Thurmond was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996. According to Nate Thurmond, this style jersey was worn for just half of a season due to the sweat getting into the Chenille fabric and causing the jersey to become too heavy. On the left front tail is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s size 42 tag with wash instructions. Attached is a “+6” Body” flag tag written in black ballpoint pen. Across the front is “The CITY” in yellow Chenille fabric. On front is player number “42” done in a circle with a bridge background in yellow Chenille fabric. On back is a cable car display, with player number “42” in yellow, white, and blue Chenille fabric. The jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind. Accompanied by a LOA from Nate Thurmond.
