A brilliant defensive outfielder for the Boston Beaneaters, Hugh Duffy also hit the ball with authority, showing remarkable power for his diminutive stature. He is the owner of the highest single-season batting average in Major League history (.438 in 1894) and was one of the' game's early stars. He assembled a string of 10 straight .300 or higher seasons, and in 1894, he batted .438 while leading the National League in doubles (50) and home runs (18). That year he won baseball's first Triple Crown with 18 HR and 145 RBI as well. He also led the NL with 236 hits and a .679 slugging percentage. Duffy's stellar all-around play helped Boston to four pennants during his nine-year tenure with the club. He was an outstanding outfielder for Boston in the 1890s, and later, as a Red Sox coach, was a tutor to the young Ted Williams. This 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" black and white Hall of Fame plaque postcard has been signed in black fountain pen by early HOFer Hugh Duffy. Pasted to black construction paper for insertion into a display binder. Postcard is EXMT-NRMT with signature that grades an 8. Accompanied by a LOA from JSA.
