Original early leather fire helmet manufactured by the John Olsen Company of New York City. The leather is shaped ornately and the stitching is nicely done; the metal eagle with its beak over the "North Fork FD" leather front badge creates an amiable appearance. An item of note is the original vent inside the top of the helmet to whisk away moisture through four small openings that are covered on the outside by a small piece of leather. Even the outside of the helmet is stiff and composed of formed leather ridges to help the water flow out of the fireman's field of vision. The original ties to size the unit to the head remain intact. The helmet is in excellent condition considering its age, a decorous vintage piece to highlight any collection.
