This steamer trunk was discovered deep in the bowels of Yankee Stadium, where the forgotten remnants and tidbits of history lie quietly, gathering dust. One of a few trunks found, it was long ago abandoned and erased from the common memory; it has sat silently for as many as 75 years awaiting rediscovery. Of unknown origin and usage, it was most likely a traveling trunk or player's storage locker. Most intriguing is the identifying number "3" which appears twice on the top of the trunk. Could this have been the personal traveling trunk of Babe Ruth? No one can say that it isn't. Did this trunk transport Ruth's or Gehrig's equipment on those long railroad trips to other baseball cities, while the legends cavorted in the bar car? No one can say that it hasn't. What may have lay inside this trunk is known only to history; once just another piece of equipment, now an awe-filled inspiration to the imagination, longing nostalgically for a bygone era. The trunk measures 46" long x 26" deep x 24" tall and is made of wood with riveted metal trim. It has seen several coats of paint since its manufacture, the latest being overall black with 6-1/2" red, white and blue stripes painted on the front, back and top center. The stripes are not painted perfectly straight. On either side of the top stripes is the number "3" done in white. There are four hinges on the back, a handle on either side and three locking latches on the front, the center one being broken. "New York Yankees" is stenciled in white on each side below the handles. On the bottom are four cylindrical metal roller wheels which show some disformation from use and weight. No original manufacturer's information or plaque exists. The trunk shows heavy use with several dents and paint chipping. This is a perfect opportunity to own a bona fide piece of Yankees history! This item will be expensive to ship. Accompanied by a LOA from Yankee-Steiner Collectibles.
