3-½” x 5” original black and white wire service photo that ran on October 10, 1916. The photo is from Game 2 of the 1916 World Series between the Brooklyn Robins and the Boston Red Sox at Braves Field; it depicts Robins pitcher Sherry Smith being tagged out at third base after hitting a double in the top of the 3rd inning. Game 2 of the 1916 World Series is remembered as the start of Babe Ruth’s 29-? World Series scoreless innings streak. After surrendering a run in the top of the 1st to an inside the park home run by Hi Myers, Ruth pitched 13-? scoreless innings until the Red Sox won the game on a pinch-hit single by Del Gainer in the 14th inning. Ruth would add to the streak in the 1918 World Series with nine innings of shutout baseball in Game 1 and another 7-? in Game 4. Ruth’s 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the World Series stood until 1961 when it was broken by Whitey Ford. Ruth was said to have been prouder of that record than he was of any of his batting feats. Adjacent above the wire photo is a digital reprint, blown up to measure 10” x 7-½”. Adjacent to the right is a panel that reads “CULVER SERVICE - 205 EAST 42 - LOANED FOR ONE USE ONLY - SMITH OUT AT THIRD - In second game of World’s Series - Oct. 10, 1916”. This same text is stamped on the verso of the wire photo, along with a partial “CULVER” sticker. Professionally-framed and matted to measure 17-1/2" x 19". We believe the photo to be original and it is in NM condition with one small pinhole.
