Ty Cobb is widely credited with setting 90 MLB records during his career. He still holds several records including the highest career batting average and most career batting titles. He retained many other records for almost a half century or more, including most career hits, most career runs, most career games played and at bats. In 1936, when the first Hall of Fame election results were announced, Cobb had been named on 222 of 226 ballots, outdistancing Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. His 98.2% stood as the record until Tom Seaver received 98.8% of the vote in 1992. In 1998, Sporting News ranked him as third on the list of 100 Greatest Baseball Players. Presented is a true piece of baseball history from Cobb. Manufacturer: Hillerich & Bradsby Model Number: C28 Labeling Period: 1923-25 Length: 34.5 inches Weight: 38.8 ounces Wood: Ash Finish: Standard. The bat is uncracked and shows evidence of excellent use. Several ball marks are visible on all sides of the barrel. Cleat marks can be seen on the front and right barrel. Also visible on the bat is a dark residue which likely is tobacco juice. A notable characteristic of Cobb was him spitting tobacco juice on the barrel of his bat. Cobb treated his bats with tobacco juice in an effort to keep dampness out of the wood. A rare piece of baseball history, this bat is accompanied by a PSA/DNA LOA grading the bat a GU 9.
