Beginning on Opening Day in 1998, when he launched a grand slam off Los Angeles' Ramon Martinez, the eyes of the baseball world followed Big Mac to learn if he could knock Maris off the top of the home run charts. Adding to the theatrical feel of the Great Home Run Chase of 1998, Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa pulled into a virtual dead heat with the heavily favored McGwire on the strength of an epic June home run binge. But on September 7th McGwire matched Maris and on September 8th he ripped the long awaited 62nd round Tripper Sosa went homer-less in the final two games of the year, McGwire cemented his place in history hitting #70 in his final at-bat of the season off Montreal's Carl Pavano. On the inside lower left of the jersey is the "Rawlings" label and adjacent is the flag tag reading "Set 1 1998." Below this is the size tag "52." Across the front of the jersey is the name "Cardinals" in script style letters made of red on blue embroidered stitch. Going through the letter "C" is a gold embroidered bat with a red embroidered Cardinal perched on each end. On the back of the jersey is a white nameplate with the team name "Cardinals." Below this is the player number "25." Both the name and number are made of red on blue tackle twill. The shirt was custom-made for McGwire. The jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
