The 83 Stanley Cup pitted the Oilers in their first ever Finals appearance against the titans of the times, NY Islanders, in their fourth consecutive appearance. This was a an old-school dog-fight of a series, in heavier hitting times. In his first appearance in the Finals, Gretzky assisted on four of the Oilers’ six goals. After game four, the Oilers players walked past the Islanders’ dressing room and noticed many of them exhausted and covered in ice packs rather than wildly celebrating, with Wayne suggesting that this gave the Oilers inspiration that they needed in order to win next year. This is a TITAN ULTRA-GLASS, TPM 2020 shaft with a KARLAM blade, of which the tape has been removed for signing purposes and tape remnants remaining. The bottom of the shaft is stamped ‘DEC 20 1982’. The handle is taped and there is a ‘W. GRETZKY’ stamp below the taping. ‘WG’ is penned on the heel of the blade. The blade is signed and inscribed ‘To Scott In Friendship Wayne Gretzky 99’, in blue marker, in our opinion rating a strong 8. The JSA letter states that this inscription was penned in the hand of Wayne Gretzky. This stick is properly marked, presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent use, with stick and puck marks. Accompanied by an LOP which states in part that the consignor’s step father was an NHL Head Trainer at the time and acquired the stick & signature from Gretzky after one of the 83 Stanley Cup Finals games. Also accompanied by an ALOA from JSA.
