In 1978, for the second straight year, the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games to win the franchise's 22nd Fall Classic overall. The Bronx Bombers offense was that season led by Lou Piniella (.314), Thurman Munson (.297), and Graig Nettles and Reggie Jackson, both of whom belted 27 home runs. This was the season in which the Yankees overcame a 14-game deficit in late July to catch the front-running Boston Red Sox and force a one-game playoff at Fenway Park to decide the A.L. East winner. The Yankees won, 5-4, and then quickly dispatched the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS before facing the Dodgers once again. Offered here a 1978 World Series trophy, produced by Balfour, that was presented only to players, team executives and owners. It features 26 gold-colored pennants that bear the team name of each MLB franchise at that time. The flags are each displayed on poles around the perimeter of a black wooden base. On the base is a gold-colored band with black lettering reading: “WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS NEW YORK YANKEES 1978.” The intricate metal design work in the middle of the trophy consists of a silver baseball that is set within a gold band atop which rests a gold crown. Positioned directly in front of the silver baseball are two press pins representing both World Series participants. Based on the remarkable route the Yankees took to winning the ‘78 title, this 12-inch-tall trophy is highly desirable. Despite some chipping and scratches on or near its base, the trophy is in MN to MT condition.
