The 1970 All-Star Game will forever be remembered by what is now considered Pete Rose's signature moment in the sport, and one that epitomizes his "all-out" style of play that rightfully earned him the legendary nickname "Charlie Hustle." Playing in front of his hometown crowd in the newly christened Riverfront Stadium, Rose single-handedly won the 1970 All-Star Game for the National League with his vicious hit on catcher Ray Fosse in the bottom of the 12th inning. That play, which separated Fosse from the ball and allowed Rose to score from second, is still talked about today and remains one of the most controversial moments in Rose's career. Obviously, Rose's intent was simply to win the game, but the force of the collision resulted in a significant injury to Fosse and basically ended his career. While we may never know with 100% certainty, photographic evidence leads us to believe that the jersey offered here is the very jersey worn by Fosse on that fateful night. There is an unprepared tear on the back of the shirt in the area of contact. It's hard to pinpoint, but the faint outline of this tear can be seen on high-res images under magnification. On the front left tail is a “SPALDING” manufacturer’s tag with a size “44” flag tag attached. Below is a tag with washing instructions and a flag tag attached that reads, “SET 1 #8P 1970”. Across the chest reads, “CLEVELAND” and on the back is the player number “8”. These are done in red on white on navy blue triple tackle twill sewn directly onto the grey flannel jersey. On the left sleeve is the team’s logo patch embroidered. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriate use. Accompanied by an additional LOA that grades the jersey an A9.
