Hall of Famer Pete Maravich had a legendary 1970 season for the LSU Tigers. Maravich was already well-known for his incredible scoring ability, but he took his game to a new level during the 1969-1970 season, establishing himself as one of the most exciting and dominant players in college basketball history. Maravich led the NCAA in scoring with an incredible 44.5 points per game, which still stands as the highest single-season scoring average in Division I men's basketball history. "Pistol Pete" averaged at least 43 points per game in his three seasons at LSU. What makes his scoring total even more ridiculous is he played before the introduction of the 3-point line. Maravich was also known for his flashy style of play, including behind-the-back passes and other dazzling moves. His incredible ball-handling and shooting ability made him a fan favorite and helped bring attention to college basketball. Maravich's incredible 1970 season helped establish him as one of the greatest college basketball players of all time and he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. Presented is Maravich’s Naismith College Player of the Year Award from that season sourced directly from the Maravich family. The award stands on a wooden base that measures 12” and stands approximately 36” tall. Multiple trophy adornments are present including one in the middle, four surrounding the top and an additional one on top. The bowl under the figure is a vintage repair by the family. A plate on the top portion of the award reads “1970 PETE MARAVICH L.S.U.”. Engraved on the base is a plate reading “THE JAMES A. NAISMITH TROPHY AWARDED TO THE MOST OUTSTANDING BASKETBALL PLAYER IN THE USA AS VOTED BY UNITED PRESS”. This museum quality relic remains in fantastic condition and is accompanied by a Maravich family LOA.
