In 1956, Paul Hornung won the Heisman trophy passing for 917 and three touchdowns. The senior did much more than a typical quarterback. He also ran for 420 yards on 94 total carries, returned kickoffs, kicked extra points, and even intercepted a pair of passes as a safety. Hornung is one of three players to have won the Heisman Trophy, been selected as first overall National Football League draft picks, and been inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame. On the inside crotch piece is the King O’Shea manufacturers tag. Attached is a size “42” flag tag. Adjacent to the left is the “W.O.W.O. Athletic Supplies” distributors tag. Across the front and back is the player number “5” in white tackle twill. There are numerous repairs on the upper chest and sleeve which are hand done presumably by a student volunteer. Hornung signed the front of the jersey in black marker and in our opinion the signature rates a near 9. The font on this jersey from his senior season can be seen in period images from the 1956 Notre Dame team yearbook. It is a perfect style-match to the game in November against North Carolina. Two period photos that accompany this lot show this style “5” as well as the outline of what appears to be a repair on the upper right shoulder in the identical location as the offered jersey. The Scholastic Football Magazines from 1954-56 document that Notre Dame used four different font styles on the number “5” and also different fabric styles. This particular font matches perfectly to the long sleeve heavy version as pictured in game action and team photos. The shirt has the proper King O’Shea tagging in the tail along with the Athletic Supply tagging of “W.O.W.O.” distributors tag which is appropriate for Notre Dame jerseys from the era. Our consignor had Hornung sign this jersey in person at a show years back. Upon seeing the jersey Hornung immediately remembered it as one of his college gamers. Originally sourced from a Notre Dame teammate, this jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent use. Accompanied by a Full LOA from JSA and a Photo-Match.com LOA grading the jersey a perfect 10.
